Two day class; Saturday 21st March plus Sunday 22nd March. 10am to 4pm each day.
In the early 1990’s Tessa was invited to a stitching day where her best friend’s grandmother, Marjorie, was going to be teaching embroidery. Encouraged by Marjorie and the other ladies at the table, Tessa learned how to use different embroidery stitches to create a pretty posy of flowers. Falling in love with the diminutive Topiary Tree, Tessa was determined to get it finished but life and two children interrupted. Always intending to return to the project, the half embroidered pieces were kept safe but languished in a drawer, moving from Adelaide to Sydney and back again, along with the tiny terracotta pot! Finally finished and reimagined in bright, fresh colours, Marjorie’s family are delighted that Tessa is bringing this gorgeous project to a new generation of embroiderers.
In the class you will learn the different stitches to make the flowers and tiny insects that are hidden in each panel. Using a variety of different fibres including cotton, wool, ribbon and silk, you will learn how to space your flowers, designing your panels so that your tree is balanced and pleasing to look at from every angle. Tessa will walk you through the construction of the tree and your kit will contain the terracotta pot ready to insert your finished topiary. Measuring in at just 15cm, this is a tiny work of textile art but if you really insist, you could use the tree as a pincushion! In the spirit of sitting around a table with others, learning & enjoying embroidery, this class is suitable for the absolute beginner through to advanced stitchers who would like to create this heirloom.
