This panel was inspired by a Japanese family crest showing a stylised lotus plant motif.
It features the leaves, flowers and seed pods of the lotus plant, Nelumbo nucifera, and a praying mantis, Mantis religiosa, with detached wings and wrapped-wire legs. Using traditional stumpwork and surface embroidery techniques, stitched with a variety of silk and metallic thread. This small circular embroidery may be worked on ivory silk or satin or the fabric of your choice. Jane used a small square of vintage kimono silk. The finished panel may be framed or mounted into the lid of a gilt bowl.
